Molly Dancing

We (well not all of the gang, but we won't go there) spent the weekend at Saddleworth folk festival and the Railway Inn at Greenhead. The weather was fantastic, the music was fantastic (thanks especially to John and Paula at the Railway) and... you're not going to believe I'm saying this... the dancing was amazing. We'd never seen Molly dancing before, and I doubt all exponents are as good as Pig Dyke Molly, but the combination of costume, energy, humour and sheer creativity was inspiring. Check out the website http://www.pigdyke.co.uk/portraits.htm
Max has started to create her next costume!!!
We were priveleged to see two great guitarists in action at the Railway. Claude Bourbon on Friday evening played the best accoustic blues I have ever heard, apart from Big Bill Broonzy's guitar shuffle, and on Saturday we were entertained by the incomparable Gordon Giltrap. If I'm still alive in July of next year I'll be at the Saddleworth folk festival and the Railway Inn - and I may well be taking a crazy costume and a guitar.

This weekend was one of the many highlights of summer 2005 for me. Just the four of us, Malcoholic, Love God, Husband No.3 and me (Max)the only female. As you can see I was in excellent company. We arrived in Greenfield to find Love God sitting in his deck chair with an already erect tent and devouring his first Guiness of the day. You just knew it was going to be a great weekend. We unpacked, set up camp and headed off to the Railway to see Claude (who by the way, is a very good looking, very, very talented french chap) who needs a few sessions at the off-stage charisma college but he is brilliant on stage! We met a stilt walker (Paul)or should I say he found us. He was floundering about in the dark and picked up the scent of alcohol being wafted across the campsite from our pitch and he came to sit and sup with us in the late evenings. Saturday was kicked off with bacon butties and a short walk into town, the festival kicked off and we waited outside a closed pub for eons. When it did open we were trampled to the ground by thirst crazed Morris Men and Black and White Molly dancers! It was quite a spectacle, topped off with some impromptu, jamming with a whole host of musicians with an array instruments including a huge Oompah thingy, squeeze boxes, guitars, mandolins etc etc. More about the Molly later.
